Me And The Law}

Submitted by: Geo Clark

After serving in the Army, I moved on to the civilian world. My first position was with a major retailer on the distribution side. Initially, I learned and managed inventory control, receiving , and shipping. It was a growing company. We were very busy. After about a year and a half, I moved to the second shift. I call it second shift but really we shipped everything until all of our customers were taken care of.

Although, we were in sunny Southern California, it did get pretty cool in the building during January and February. I would wear a red, flannel shirt every night to stay warm. Because it was a warehouse, we would get pretty dirty. By the end of each night, I’m sure I looked pretty rough. Okay, I looked pretty scruffy. On this particular night, we finished at about 2 AM. I was real tired and wanted to get home to bed.

I always eat before I get home. So, I went to a fast food restaurant next to a donut shop. I had a new car so my appearance was no match for the vehicle. I looked like I hadn’t bathed or did laundry for a month.

I pulled into the fast food restaurant and parked. I bought my food and brought it back to the car. A police officer was standing by the car. Immediately, he told me to put my hands on the hood of the car. The donut shop next door had just been robbed. After I put my hands on the hood, he told me that the donut shop had just been robbed and the robber looked just like me. What he really meant was that the description of the robber had him wearing a flannel shirt just like me.

Then the interrogation began. Even worse, a crowd gathered. First, he called my work to confirm I worked there. Luckily, someone was there to confirm my identity and whereabouts. Then, he started the complete car search. I do mean complete. He started from the trunk and started tearing stuff up until he got to the front. I actually think that he did that for the crowd. When you are innocent, some of your spirit is taken from you when people look at you like a criminal. They look down on you. It is not an arrogant look. It is more of a “what kind of low life are you” look.

My vehicle inspection took about 30 minutes. The crowd was about 50 people which was a lot of people that should have been sleeping at 2:30 in the morning. Finally, the police officer came to me and said ” it looks like you are not the guy. It must be someone else wearing a flannel shirt.”. I wanted to say “really” but I bit my tongue so I could go home.

He let me go. I always remember how low he depicted me and made me feel, even today. If I had a good lawyer, I may have done something about it. I was happy to be left alone. When you have a story to tell at work, everyone has their own version. The “if it was me version”. It is different when you are under the gun.
